About I-PASS

As your vehicle travels through a toll plaza, a radio antenna sends a signal to your I-PASS transponder that triggers the deduction of a toll from your account.

A "Ttoll" occurs when a signal from your I-PASS transponder is read, but no toll is collected due to no funds available in your account at the time of the transaction. Funds must be added to your account within seven days of this transaction in order to avoid a violation. If funds are added, you will then see a "Ttoll" transaction posted to your account, otherwise, this unpaid transaction is sent as a violation to the vehicle's registered owner.

If your I-PASS is lost or stolen, call 800-UC-IPASS (800-824-7277) as soon as possible so the lost or stolen transponder can be deactivated. If you would like a replacement I-PASS, you pay only the deposit, and your account balance will be transferred to the replacement transponder. If the lost or stolen transponder is located and the unit is returned to a Customer Service Center, the deposit will be refunded in full.

I-PASS Assist is available for eligible Tollway drivers. If you are enrolled in Medicaid you qualify for I-PASS Assist. Please contact the Department of Public Aid for program criteria. Visit the I-PASS Assist section to learn more.

To cancel your account, you must return your I-PASS transponder. For your convenience, this may be done either in person or through the mail.

If a transponder has been painted, designed or tampered with, the deposit will be forfeited.

If a customer does not want to return their  transponder(s), they need to notify the cutsomer service center.  Their deposit will be forfeited.

If canceling your account through the mail:
Via certified mail, send your transponder, wrapped in foil, with a letter requesting the I-PASS account be closed that also includes your return address. Your balance and deposit will be refunded within 45 days of receipt of the transponder and request. If you opened your account with cash or check, a check will be mailed to the address indicated in the letter. If you opened your account with a credit or debit card, the card registered on the account will be credited.

Send transponder to:
I-PASS Fulfillment Center
P.O. Box 806518
Chicago, IL 60680

If canceling your account in person:
You can return your transponder to an I-PASS Customer Service Center.

Upon receipt of the transponder, a customer service representative will be able to return your deposit and any remaining balance to your credit card.

Shared Balance allows families or businesses that have more than one transponder to consolidate the balances to one I-PASS account – "sharing" the same pool of funds.

Shared Balance account replenishment amounts are recalculated each month based on the average monthly usage totals for the previous six months. Most accounts will continue to replenish at the standard minimum of $40. High usage accounts (fewer then 5 percent of all I-PASS accounts) will replenish at greater amounts.

Please note: If you have requested a fixed replenishment rate on your Shared Balance account, you will not be impacted by the recalculation.

Occasionally tolls do not post to your account at the time of the transaction. This is usually due to a missing, improperly mounted or inactive transponder with a dead battery. These unsuccessful transactions are digitally recorded and we then try to match those digital recordings to the license plate on your I-PASS account.  If a match between the image and the license plate on your I-PASS account is successful, the toll is then posted to your account.  This match is attempted as a courtesy to help I-PASS customers avoid violations.

These digitally recorded tolls are called "Video-Tolls" or  "Vtolls." If your transponder is properly mounted and Vtolls are occuring on your account, please test the transponder battery to be sure it is functioning properly.  You will see "Vtoll" appear next to the transaction when you review your account records. Tolls that are successfully deducted at the time of transaction are labeled "toll."

I-PASS is the best way to travel the Illinois Tollway, making your trip faster, less expensive and more convenient, all while saving you time and money. It eliminates the need to stop at a gate by allowing I-PASS users to drive in the open road tolling lanes. Plus, customers with I-PASS pay 50 percent less than customers who pay cash.

Both single and multiple transponder accounts replenish at a rate based on average monthly usage. Your account replenishment rate is based on the previous six months of usage on your account and is recalculated on the first of each month (minimum $40). The minimum balance at which you replenish is 10 percent of your six-month average usage (minimum $10).

By default, your replenishment will be set according to six month's average usage. However, you can reset your replenishment amount at $40 or above by managing your account online or calling 800-UC-IPASS (800-824-7277). Be aware that lowering your replenishment amount will mean that your credit card will be charged more often if your I-PASS usage remains near your past six months usage.

Be aware that the I-PASS account holder will be responsible for any and all license plates listed on their account. Should there be outstanding violations associated to these plates, they will become part of the I-PASS account holder's responsibility and could cause the I-PASS account to be suspended.

The Tollway sends account alert emails warning of low balance, no balance and expiring credit card to the address registered on your I-PASS account. To help prevent these important emails from being flagged as spam or junk by your email system, please add mailer@mail2.getipass.com to your email address book.

On the Road With I-PASS

First, check with your rental car company on its policy for paying tolls. Some rental car companies provide transponders. In such cases, be sure you understand how to use the transponders and how you will be charged for transponder-based tolls.  Inquire about transponder availability and fees with the rental agent.

Second, if your rental car company does not provide a transponder or you do not want to use the transponder they provide, you have two options:

  • Pay the cash tolls.
  • Use your I-PASS or E-ZPass transponder.
Be sure to mount the transponder on the inside of the windshield, next to the rearview mirror, to help ensure that the transponder signal is received.
Review your I-PASS account activity regularly to ensure the charges are accurate.
We do NOT recommend adding rental car license plates to your account.

In the event your transponder signal is not properly read while in the rental car, there is a possibility you will receive a violation notice. The violation notice will be sent to the rental car company, which is the registered owner of the vehicle. The rental car company then has two options: 1) by Illinois law, it may re-assign the violation notice to you based on its record of who was renting the vehicle when the violations were incurred; or 2) it may choose to pay the notice and bill you. If a rental car agency chooses to pay the notice and bill you, you will not be eligible for the settlement guidelines.

I-PASS can be used on the Chicago Skyway, Indiana Toll Road and anywhere E-ZPass is accepted.

I-PASS is not accepted at airport parking lots and other non-roadway facilities that accept E-ZPass.

The designated I-PASS lanes on the Chicago Skyway and Indiana Toll Road are gated and located on the right. Wait for the gate to rise before proceeding.

I-PASS is not accepted in the attended lanes and discounts do not apply on the Skyway (Chicago Skyway Customer Service: 773-356-5555).

Driving in Indiana?
Not all plazas or lanes are equipped to accept I-PASS or E-ZPass, so follow directional signs on the road or visit the Indiana Toll Road website for more information. Passenger vehicles with I-PASS enjoy the same 40 percent discount as E-ZPass users.

I-PASS works in all toll lanes on the system. Open road tolling lanes offer quick, safe and easy travel for I-PASS users, but sometimes you must use the cash plaza if your exit is nearby. At ramp tolls, use the lane most convenient for your route.

Yes. All traffic must obey the posted stop signs in these lanes.

No. You pay the I-PASS price whenever you use your I-PASS on the Illinois Tollway.

If your vehicle is registered to the account and your account is in good standing, the toll will automatically be deducted from your account as a Video Toll (Vtoll). Vehicles registered to an I-PASS account cannot pay unpaid tolls online. Please note that excessive Vtolls will result in penalties.

Yes. In fact, the technology in the open road tolling lanes will automatically calculate and deduct the proper toll. You no longer need to use the cash lanes or purchase a special transponder.

Yes.

When the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company - the private company that also operates the Skyway - asked to join the E-ZPASS Consortium of toll roads in 2009, a clause was included in the agreement that allows for agencies to charge a 3 cent per transaction fee to the Indiana Toll Road.

This fee is meant to recoup the costs of providing customer services (call center support, account management, transponder mailing, etc.) to Indiana Toll Road customers, the majority of whom have I-PASS. In fact, of the 39.6 million electronic toll transactions on the ITR (includes Skyway) in 2010, 24.8 million (63 percent) were I-PASS patrons.

Ultimately, the Indiana Toll Road has opted to pass these costs on to I-PASS customers using the Indiana Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway.

Conversely, the Illinois Tollway could charge Indiana Toll Road/E-ZPass users the same 3 cent per transaction fee. Our current system does not allow for that to happen, though it is certainly something the Illinois Tollway and its Board may consider pursuing in the future as we revamp our electronic tolling system.

Effective May 1, 2012, the Indiana Tollroad has adopted a policy to charge its customers a $1.00 surcharge for improperly mounted transponders.

For safety and to ensure a successful toll transaction, toll agencies ask I-PASS and E-ZPass customers to properly mount their transponders on the windshield when driving. Waiting until the last minute to find your transponder or holding it in your windshield interferes with the transaction.

Indiana Tollroad employees will verbally notify customers when an improperly mounted transponder is identified and the $1.00 surcharge is assessed. The $1.00 surcharge will be added to the standard toll charge on customer account statements.

Free mounting strips are available at every toll plaza, oases 7-Eleven stores and at all Customer Service Centers on the Illinois Tollway. If you are in Indiana, mounting strips are available at Indiana Toll Road travel plazas and customer service facilities and cash lane attendants will have strips available, as well.

Yes. If you have multiple transponders, you will automatically be enrolled in Shared Balance, which will consolidate the balances of individual transponders into one account balance.

If you have multiple I-PASS transponders on your account, Shared Balance consolidates individual balances into one account balance. However, you can view individual transponder transaction histories and monthly toll usage.

When driving through a ramp or mainline toll plaza, I-PASS users can look for the yellow and blue lights at the end of the lane on the left side. This light indicates the account status.

A blue light = successful I-PASS transaction

A blue and a yellow light = successful transaction, low balance - update your account

A yellow light = unsuccessful transaction, no balance - contact the Illinois Tollway

To update your account:

You also should review your account regularly, online, in person or by phone to update information.

Another way to make sure there are funds in your account is to go through a manual or automatic lane and see if the gate goes up automatically.

For safety and to ensure a successful toll transaction. Before the transaction takes place, the transponder is activated on the approach to the plaza. Waiting until the last minute to find your transponder or holding it in your window interferes with the transaction. The I-PASS mounting strips are removable and do not leave a residue on your window.

Mounting strips are available for free at every toll plaza and Illinois Tollway Customer Service Center. Refer to the Customer Service Section for more locations.

Drive through a toll plaza cash lane and the toll collector can verify whether or not your transponder is working. You should also check your account regularly, online or by phone to review toll transactions.

You will need to exchange your transponder for a new unit. This exchange can be done in person or by mail. Please refer to the Customer Service section for locations and hours. To exchange your transponder by certified mail, wrap it in foil, and send it with a letter requesting an exchange to the address below. A replacement unit will be shipped upon receipt of your old transponder.

Less than 1 percent of vehicles have windshields or systems that interfere with transactions using the windshield-mounted transponder. In this case, a license plate transponder (LPT) which mounts on the front bumper of your vehicle is available for the same price as a standard transponder. In general, windshields that contain metal in the glass (metal oxide) and mirrors with compass or temperature readings may prevent the I-PASS signal from being read properly. Also, windshields with the following glass features may interfere with the I-PASS signal and require alternative or exterior mounting: solar ray, solar tint, heated, heat reflected, insulated, Insta-Clear. If you are unsure if your vehicle has one of listed features, contact your car dealership.

Refer to the sample list of vehicles with special features identified by the Illinois Tollway as having special features that require alternative mounting placement or an exterior license plate transponder.

Go online, call 800-UC-IPASS or refer to the Customer Service chart for more information about obtaining an LPT. Learn more about special windshields.

These older model transponders need to be replaced to ensure customers continue to receive the benefits of I-PASS and avoid toll violations. The Tollway recommends that these transponders be replaced for two important reasons:

  1. The older transponder model is no longer being manufactured and, therefore, is no longer certified by the manufacturer.
  2. Our testing has shown that the older transponder model does not perform as well as the new transponders on the new open road tolling system.

Automatic balance replenishment costs $50. This includes $40 in prepaid tolls and a $10 refundable deposit. A credit or debit card is required to set up an automatic replenishment account.

Manual replenishment costs $60. This includes $40 in prepaid tolls and a $20 refundable deposit.

Jewel-Osco charges a $2.90 service fee for all transponders.

To cover administrative costs related to providing I-PASS transponders, Jewel applies a $2.90 service fee. The Tollway does not receive any portion of this fee.
