11/13/2008 Demolition Scheduled on Half Day Road Bridge over North Tri-State (I-94) Tollway
Eastbound Traffic to Shift to Westbound Side of Bridge Next Week
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Demolition work is scheduled to begin next week on the Half Day Road Bridge over the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) for bridge reconstruction work as part of the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294) Rebuild & Widen Project between Dempster Street and the Wisconsin state line. Completion of the bridge project is scheduled by the end of 2009.

Rebuilding and lengthening the Half Day Road Bridge will allow the Tollway to widen I-94 underneath Half Day Road (IL Route 22) to provide congestion relief and reduce travel times. Construction throughout a 45-mile corridor in Cook and Lake Counties began in 2007 and mainline work is scheduled to be complete in 2010. This work is part of the Illinois Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program – Open Roads for a Faster Future.

Half Day Road Bridge Reconstruction Begins November 17

Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, November 17, the eastbound side of the bridge is scheduled to close for demolition and reconstruction work. All traffic will be shifted to the westbound side and one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction throughout construction. The left-hand turn lanes will remain open in each direction for Half Day Road traffic entering I-94.

The bridge work is being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation and officials from Lake County, Cook County, and the villages of Deerfield, Riverwoods, Lincolnshire and Bannockburn to minimize the impact to drivers, however delays are expected.

The main impacts to Tri-State Tollway traffic will be shoulder closures and temporary overnight lane closures for bridge demolition and reconstruction including beam erection activities. Mainline lane closures will be permitted off-peak only to minimize the impact to traffic.

Work Zone Safety

A 45 m.p.h. speed limit is in effect 24/7 in all construction zones, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise motorists of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker. Keep Workers Alive – Drive 45.
