“The difference is, we’re making progress—and Illinois can trust that Tollway officials are working solutions, rather than excuses.”

Rockford Register Star Editorial,
April 25, 2004

The Tollway has an eleven-member board, including Governor Blagojevich and Secretary of Transportation Milton R. Sees who serve as Ex-officio members. The Chairman and Directors are appointed by the Governor and serve 4-year terms; no more than five of the members may be from one political party. The Board of Directors sets policy for the operation, maintenance and construction of the roadways.

The Tollway Board meets on the last Thursday of each month, except in November and December when meetings are a week earlier due to holidays. All Board meetings are open to the public.

John Mitola Chairman, Board of Directors

John Mitola was reappointed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich to a second four-year term as the Chairman of the Illinois Tollway Board of Directors in September 2007. He has been committed to restoring public confidence in the Illinois Tollway and was instrumental in leading the Tollway’s reform agenda, which focused on the ABC’s of reform: increasing Accountability, implementing Business efficiencies and improving Customer service.

Mr. Mitola has played a direct role in enhancing customer communications through the agency’s more efficient use of the Internet and improved and increased signage on the Tollway. As a result, drivers are able to make informed decisions about their travel before embarking on a trip as well as adjusting plans en route. Also, under his leadership the Board of Directors established a new Tollway Audit Committee to ensure that Tollway spending tracks closely to budget.

Mr. Mitola’s advice, guidance, and leadership while serving in the public role of Chairman was crucial in the development and passage of the Tollway's comprehensive Congestion-Relief Program: Open Roads for a Faster Future. Designed to benefit the over 1.4 million motorists who travel the Illinois Tollway daily, the plan will reduce traffic and congestion, rebuild/restore nearly the entire 286-mile system, add lanes to the Tollway’s major roads, convert 20 mainline toll plazas to Open Road Tolling, and build the eagerly anticipated South Extension of I-355 into Will County.

Mr. Mitola is a Senior Vice President with Kingsdale Capital International. Kingsdale Capital is a private equity and capital advisory firm specializing in merchant banking, leveraged buyouts and corporate finance. With more than 16 years of experience in the fields of energy development, green energy, venture capital, commercial real estate, engineering, and construction, he brings a unique and varied business perspective to the Illinois Tollway.

Mr. Mitola earned his B.S. in Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana and juris doctor from DePaul University, College of Law. He is actively involved in the community and holds many Board leadership roles, namely Christopher House, the Chicago Scholarship Fund and the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.
