Toll Questions

When using an I-PASS Only (IPO) lane with a gate, or an unmanned toll collection lane at ramp plazas look for:

A blue light = completed I-PASS transaction

A blue + a yellow light = completed transaction, low balance - update your account

A yellow light = unsuccessful transaction, no balance - contact the Illinois Tollway

If you still are unsure if payment was paid you can sign onto your account online and review the activity.

If you suspect that the toll machine is not working after depositing the toll, wait 10 seconds and then proceed through the lane. Paying customers are not recorded as violators. Do not deposit additional change into the coin basket, as this will not cause the light to change.

The system notes the problem and dispatches a service representative.

If you have any other concerns regarding malfunctioning toll machines, please contact the Toll Services Division at (630) 241-6800, ext. 2101.

Proceed through a cash plaza rather than an Open Road Tolling (ORT) lane. You can use either an I-PASS Only (IPO) lane or a conventional cash lane. Look for the yellow and blue lights at the end of the lane on your left side to signal your account status.

A missed toll occurs when a driver goes through a toll area without making payment. This can happen in Open Road Tolling (ORT) lanes as well as at cash lanes without gates. If payment for the toll is made within 7 days, the driver pays only for the missed toll.

If payment is not made within 7 days each missed toll becomes a violation. Each violation carries a fine of $20 plus the original cost of the toll. If the violation is not taken care of within the 21 days allowed by law the fees may escalate.

When you miss a toll on the Illinois Tollway, you are expected to pay the actual toll amount due for the associated plaza and vehicle classification. If payment is received within one week (7 calendar days), the missed toll will not be processed as a violation. Failure to pay tolls can result in fines and possible suspension of your license plate and/or your driver's license.
