Rates Vary From Typical Toll Plaza
As indicated in this
chart and all rate materials distributed since modified rates were agreed to in
late September, rates in general toll rate chart above are typical mainline toll
plaza rates that can vary by location.
Where to Find the Rates

How Tolls Are Calculated
Tolls for trucks and cars are
calculated by distance traveled. The foundation is a
standard per mile charge for each road. Therefore, rates are
higher when plazas are further apart.
Toll Rates Vary By Plaza
- The average plaza rate for large trucks is about $3.50 peak/$2.65
off-peak
- The plazas that carry 83 percent of truck traffic have rates of $4
for large trucks (medium $2.25/small $1.50) or below during
peak
- While toll rates exceed the typical mainline toll plaza at 5 ramp plazas,
toll rates are lower than the typical mainline plaza rate at 40 ramp
toll plazas and go as low as $1.50 for large
trucks

Toll Collection Removed** |
* Tolls collected WB on and EB off only, effective August 2006. Other traffic will pay toll at relocated DeKalb Mainline Plaza.
** Tolls collected at relocated Dixon mainline plaza effective August 2006.
These plazas only carry about 17 percent of all
truck traffic on the Illinois Tollway. Also the plazas with the highest
rates (Dixon & DeKalb) carry only 2 percent of
truck traffic.
Trucks Save Money with I-PASS
I-PASS already reducing trip times
- Commercial vehicle operators who currently use I-PASS
are reducing their travel time by up to 20 minutes for a round trip, using a
trip on I-294 between Indiana and Wisconsin as an example.
- By spending less time on the road in traffic,
truckers can spend less on fueling and operating their rigs.
- Truckers save $25 for every 15-minute reduction in
trip time, (The Midwest Truckers Association). For example, truckers can
save as much as $333 per month if they take 10 round trips using I-PASS on
the full length of the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/294).
- Savings due to less wear and tear on vehicles (engines, tires etc.) due
to harsh braking and acceleration.
Trucks will save even more through the Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program, Open Roads for a Faster Future. We are dedicated to reduce your travel times by:
- Rebuilding and/or Restoring nearly the entire 286-mile toll highway system.
- Widening many miles of major tollroads.
- Opening 20 barrier toll plazas to Open Road Tolling.
- Extending the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) from I-55 through Will County to I-80.

*Greater time savings could be realized seasonally, especially where the
roadway is widened.
Trucks with I-PASS traveling during non-peak hours will benefit from
I-PASS savings.
- At the urging of the Illinois Trucking Association,
the Tollway agreed to extend discount to weekday off peak and daytime weekends
which cut rates by 25 percent at these times and saved truckers $100
million over four years.
Note: The daytime non-peak discounted rate for trucks with I-PASS from 9 AM - 3:30 PM & 6:30 PM - 10 PM on weekdays and weekends will sunset on December 31, 2008 when most construction will be finished.
Where can truckers get I-PASS?
I-PASS transponders for large (5-axle+) trucks are available
at:
- Road Ranger Travel Centers in the Rockford area in northwest Illinois,
northwest Indiana and southern Wisconsin (Road Ranger only accepts cash for I-PASS purchases).*
*Smaller trucks (those with 2 axles and six tires, or 3-4 axles) can only get
I-PASS online, by phone or at CCC
