The Illinois Tollway is resurfacing and widening a 4-mile section of the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) between 75 th Street and Ogden Avenue . This work is part of the Tollway's Congestion-Relief Program to reduce travel times.

Work to resurface and widen the northbound lanes was completed in late October and northbound traffic is now traveling on four lanes from 75 th Street to Ogden Avenue .

Work to resurface and widen the southbound lanes is scheduled to begin in early 2009. In addition, northbound resurface and widen work is scheduled at 75 th Street . All construction will be completed in late 2009.

Local Crossroad Bridge Impacts
The Resurface & Widen project also includes bridge deck widening work on the I-355 Bridges over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and over Hitchcock Avenue .

One southbound lane on I-355 over Hitchcock Avenue is scheduled to be closed until late November for work to reconstruct and lengthen the bridge over Hitchcock Avenue .

During mainline construction, traffic on Jackson Avenue and on Hitchcock Avenue under I-355 will be impacted by work to widen bridge abutments. The same number of lanes will be maintained on the crossroads during construction to minimize the impact to traffic.

Minimizing Impact to Reduce Delays

Work is scheduled during off-peak hours to minimize the impact to traffic. Three lanes of traffic will be maintained during daytime hours. Lane reductions are permitted overnight beginning with one lane closing after 8 p.m. and a second lane closing after 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. each morning.

Work Zone Safety

Construction work zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Remember to drive safely in work zones and abide by the 45 m.p.h. speed limit on the mainline. See the Tollway’s Work Zone Safety page for more information.

Schedule
  • 2008– Work to resurface and build a fourth northbound lane between 75 th Street and Ogden Avenue completed.
  • 2009– Resurface and widening work southbound from 75 th Street to Ogden Avenue and northbound at 75 th Street.
  • Late 2009– I-355 Resurface & Widen from 75 th Street to Ogden Avenue is scheduled be completed by the end of 2009.
