I-PASS by the Numbers

3.3 million transponders are currently being used by Tollway drivers

Timeline of I-PASS on the Road
1993: I-PASS electronic toll collection debuts in November on the North-South Tollway (I-355)
1995: The first I-PASS Only Lane for cars opens on December 22 at the Irving Park Road Toll Plaza on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294)
1997: Systemwide installation of I-PASS technology in all toll collection lanes begins in July.
1998: In November, the Illinois Tollway opened the first I-PASS Express lanes at the Edens Spur Toll Plaza on the Tri-State Tollway Edens Spur ramp (I-94)
2000: The first Truck I-PASS Only lane opens in December at the Cermak Toll Plaza on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294).
2003: In August, I-PASS Expansion Project to add 37 new I-PASS lanes at 22 locations by Spring 2004 was announced.
2004: In May, Phase II of the I-PASS Expansion Project, adding 65 new I-PASS lanes at 38 locations was announced.

In August, the Congestion-Relief Program which included a complete mainline conversion to Open Road Tolling by 2007, was announced.
2005: In November , Open Road Tolling debuts at the Irving Park Road Toll on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294).
2006: Illinois becomes the first state to complete, in less than two years, a total mainline conversion from a traditional barrier system to an end-to-end Open Road Tolling system, saving drivers an average of 10 minutes per trip.

On October 29, Tollway and local elected officials celebrate the complete system conversion - delivered as promised within two years.
2007: The Tollway opened five Customer Service Centers at its Oases, bringing the number of Customer Service Centers to six. Tollway drivers now have locations systemwide in which to stop and update their accounts. Customers also may purchase an I-PASS or swap out a transponder.
