The Illinois Tollway is rebuilding and widening the North Tri-State Tollway (I-294/I-94) throughout a 39-mile corridor to provide congestion relief. The project includes reconstructing and widening to four lanes in each direction of the North Tri-State Tollway between Dempster Street and IL Route 173. Four lanes are now open in each direction between Grand Avenue and IL Route 173. Work to reconstruct the roadway north of IL Route 173 to Russell Road and resurface pavement from Russell Road to the Wisconsin state line is complete. This work is part of the Tollway's Congestion-Relief Program to reduce travel times.

Three lanes in each direction are on new pavement on the two right lanes and right shoulder as construction work is nearing completion on the median and new fourth lanes in each direction.
Update – Bridge Construction
Several bridges are being rebuilt and lengthened to accommodate mainline construction. Bridge work is scheduled at Ballard Road, Golf Road, Central Road, Milwaukee Avenue, Lake Avenue, Sanders Road, Half Day Road, Rockland Road (IL Route 176), and Washington Street. Bridge work is complete at Lake Cook Road, Willow Road, Belvidere Road, Rosecrans Road (IL Route 173), Grand Avenue, O'Plaine Road, and at U.S. Route 41
Half Day Road – All traffic is now traveling on the newly reconstructed eastbound side of the bridge while the westbound side of the bridge is closed for reconstruction work.
Rockland Road– One lane in each direction on Rockland Road under I-94 is closed for bridge abutment work.
Crossroad bridge construction is being staggered to reduce inconvenience. The bridges remain open with staged traffic and reduced lanes. The Tollway is coordinating bridge work with IDOT, Cook County , and Lake County to minimize the impact to local roads, but delays are expected.

Work Zone Safety
Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Reduced speed limits will be in place on bridges under construction, while a 45 m.p.h. speed limit will be in place on the mainline. See the Tollway’s Work Zone Safety page.
