The Illinois Tollway has completed work to rebuild and widen the 2-mile section of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) between IL Route 83 and York Road in Oak Brook, including the completion of the new westbound York Road Toll Plaza. The project is one of several underway throughout a 23-mile corridor from Oak Brook to North Aurora . This work is part of the Tollway's Congestion-Relief Program to reduce travel times.

In addition to rebuilding the nearly 50-year-old roadway, the Rebuild & Widen Project adds a fourth lane in each direction to provide additional capacity and help reduce congestion. The project also includes completion of the cash plaza and the addition of a fourth Open Road Tolling (ORT) lane at the new westbound York Road Toll Plaza. Reconstruction of the connector ramp bridges between I-88 and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) also was completed to increase capacity from one lane to two lanes and permit access to the York Road Toll Plaza ORT lanes from the northbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294). In addition, the project included rebuilding the Harger Road entrance to westbound I-88, and rebuilding the bridge over 22 nd Street.

Update – Latest Construction Info

Mainline I-88 traffic in both directions is now traveling on four new lanes of new pavement between IL Route 83 and York Road.

22nd Street
The 22nd Street Bridge is complete. Demolition of the I-88 bridges over 22 nd Street was staged in sections to keep three lanes open on I-88 during reconstruction. Off-peak lane closures on 22 nd Street under I-88 began in 2007. Two lanes in each direction are being maintained during peak traffic hours on 22 nd Street under I-88. Three lanes of traffic are scheduled to open on 22 nd Street under I-88 before Thanksgiving. Some punch list work will continue through the end of the year to complete work on the bicycle path.

Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Connector Ramp
The new Tri-State Connector Ramp is complete in a two-lane configuration. One lane is directed to the cash side of the York Road Toll Plaza and the other is directed to the ORT lanes. This is the first time that drivers coming from the northbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) have had access to the ORT lanes at the York Road Toll Plaza .

York Road Toll Plaza

Four Open Road Tolling (ORT) lanes are open at the westbound York Road Toll Plaza. Traffic exiting at IL Route 83 can exit from the ORT lanes in this new configuration. The cash side of the toll plaza is complete and provides one I-PASS Only lane and four tollbooths for those paying cash. Traffic exiting at the Oak Brook exit must go through the cash plaza.

Spring Road Interchange
Pavement reconstruction work is complete and ramps are in final striped configurations.

Minimizing Impact to Reduce Delays

Three lanes of Tollway traffic remained available in both directions during daytime hours through the use of reduced lane widths and shifted lanes.

Work Zone Safety

Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Remember to drive safely in work zones and abide by the 45 m.p.h. speed limit on the mainline. See the Tollway’s Work Zone Safety page for more information.
