Fees, Rules and Regulations for Over-weight Vehicles

Rules, regulations and fees may be necessary for the movement of vehicles on the Illinois Tollway depending on the axle spacing, weight, width and height. This page details those as well as restrictions on movements and escort requirements.

For infrequent trips, over-weight permits not requiring analysis may be obtained at the first staffed toll plaza.
Gross Weight of Any Vehicle Exceeding Above Maximum Limits
Any vehicle exceeding the maximum gross weight limits listed above will be analyzed on an individual basis. Call 630-241-6800 extension 3847 to request a permit. Allow 3 days for review and approval.
Equipment Operating Under Own Power
Equipment such as cranes, drill rigs and concrete pumps are issued permits under different guidelines and are analyzed on an individual basis. Call 630-241-6800 extension 3847 to request a permit.

Restrictions on Movements (Over Dimension Permits)
- Monday through Friday ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset
- Saturday ½ hour before sunrise to noon
- Sunday No travel on the Tollway
- No movements after noon on the day before a holiday or holiday weekend (listed below)
- New Years Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Escorts
- One civilian escort vehicle required
- Vehicles over 110
- Vehicles exceeding maximum practical weight limits
- Two civilian escort vehicles required
- Vehicles exceeding 145 in length
- State Police escorts required
- Overweight movements requiring all traffic cleared from bridges
- Movements where traffic control is required
- Vehicles over 175 in length
All vehicles must have a state (IDOT) permit number prior to obtaining a Tollway permit.
Illinois Tollway requirements are consistent with the rules and regulations of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Military vehicles are not exempt from these rules and regulations.
