The Illinois Tollway has completed a joint project with the Illinois Department of Transportation to reconstruct and lengthen the Half Day Road (IL Route 22) Bridge over the Tri-State Tollway (I-294/I-94). As part of this project, the Tollway also widened and reconstructed about ¾ of a mile of Half Day Road between Hewitt Drive/Westminster Way and Lakeside Drive.
The Half Day Road Bridge was reconstructed and lengthened in order to accommodate the Tollway's North Tri-State Rebuild & Widen Project. The mainline project included reconstructing and widening to four lanes in each direction of the North Tri-State Tollway between Dempster Street and IL Route 173, reconstructing the roadway north of IL Route 173 to Russell Road, and resurfacing pavement from Russell Road to the Wisconsin state lane. This work is part of the Tollway's Congestion-Relief Program to reduce travel times.

Minimizing Impact to Reduce Delays
The Tollway coordinated bridge work with IDOT and officials from Lake County, Cook County, and the villages of Deerfield, Riverwoods, Lincolnshire, and Bannockburn to minimize the impact to local roads. One through lane and one turn lane were maintained in both directions during the project. Lane closures were permitted off-peak only to minimize the impact to traffic.

Work Zone Safety
Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. A 35 m.p.h. speed limit was in place on the bridge during construction, and a 45 m.p.h. speed limit was in place on the mainline.
See the Tollway’s Work Zone Safety page for more information.
