The Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) Roadway Resurfacing and Bridge Repair Project is resurfacing the 20-year-old roadway along an 18 mile corridor in both directions and repairing 24 bridge structures between 83rd St. and 75th St. and between the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and Army Trail Road. The project also includes completion of pavement repairs between I-55 and 83rd Street. This work is part of the Tollway’s $6.3 billion Congestion-Relief Program – Open Roads for a Faster Future.
Construction Update (8-31-10)
Project completion is scheduled by the end of 2010. All lanes will remain open during construction, except for temporary lane closures.
As of September 3: - Southbound traffic between Army Trail and Butterfield Road will be in an Express Lane configuration. Two Local Lanes will be shifted right with one Express Lane on the left shoulder with no access to exit until Ogden Avenue. All other traffic between 83rd St. and Army Trail Road will be shifted to the right with a work zone on the left.

Purpose
Pertinent Details on Why and How
The Veterans Memorial Tollway from Army Trail Road to I-55 is a 20-year-old road and resurfacing is needed to provide a new, smooth surface and extend the life of the roadway. The Tollway is coordinating with IDOT, DuPage County, and local communities. The section between 75th Street and Ogden Avenue was resurfaced and widened in 2008-2009.

Building Green
The Tollway is committed to “Building Green” and minimizing the environmental impact of construction by reducing, recycling and reusing materials. The new asphalt overlay on I-355 will incorporate recycled materials including reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), ground tire rubber and recycled asphalt shingles. In addition to reducing the cost of this work, reuse of these materials reduces the need for virgin asphalt materials and reduces the volume of material that would otherwise be sent to landfills.
Work Zone Safety
Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. A 45 m.p.h. speed limit will be in place on the mainline.
See the Tollway’s Work Zone Safety page for more information.
