11/26/2008 Illinois Tollway Opens Two Lanes in Each Direction on 22nd Street as Promised for Holiday Shopping Season in Oak BrookDOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – The Illinois Tollway has reopened two lanes in each direction on 22nd Street in Oak Brook under the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) in time for the start of the holiday shopping season. The improvements on 22nd Street are part of the Reagan Memorial Tollway Rebuild & Widen Project between York Road and IL Route 83 and have been coordinated with the Village of Oak Brook and the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program – Open Roads for a Faster Future.Multiple Rebuild & Widen Projects are underway along a 23-mile stretch of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) from Oak Brook to North Aurora. The work involves four separate rebuilding and widening projects with roadway work scheduled for completion by the end of 2009. New Lanes Open for Oak Brook Holiday Shopping Two lanes in each direction are now open to traffic on 22nd Street under the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Bridge with two lanes located on either side of the new center pier. Storm sewer installation work will continue through the winter in a protected work zone to the north. Work in 2008 included re-decking the Salt Creek Bridge, installation of new storm sewers and work to rebuild the Tollway bridge over 22nd Street. In 2009 work will begin to reconstruct and add a third lane on 22nd Street between Jorie Boulevard and McDonald Drive. Other work included in the project includes rebuilding two bike paths under I-88, resurfacing 22nd Street between Jorie Boulevard and Salt Creek and bridge lighting aesthetics. The project is scheduled for completion in 2009. Work Zone Safety A 45 m.p.h. speed limit is in effect 24/7 in all construction zones, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise motorists of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker. Keep Workers Alive – Drive 45. Part of Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program The reconstruction and widening of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) is part of the Illinois Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program - Open Roads for a Faster Future – which will reduce travel times by rebuilding/restoring nearly all of the system, widening/adding lanes to many miles of existing roads, converting 20 mainline toll plazas to barrier-free Open Road Tolling, and extending I-355 south to I-80 in Will County.
