04/16/2009 Traffic Shift Scheduled on Westbound 22nd Street in Oak Brook for Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Rebuild & Widen Project
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Westbound traffic on 22nd Street between Jorie Blvd. and McDonald Drive in Oak Brook will be impacted by a traffic shift scheduled for Friday, April 17, as part of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Rebuild & Widen Project. The traffic shift on 22nd Street will move one westbound lane onto the eastbound side of the road and will create a new construction work zone that will be in place throughout the summer. Splitting traffic will keep two lanes open in both directions during peak hours and permit construction of the center pier support columns for the new I-88 bridge over 22nd Street and completions of storm sewer work. The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2009.

The rebuilding and widening projects along a 23-mile stretch of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) from Oak Brook to North Aurora are on budget and scheduled for completion this year as part of the Illinois Tollway’s $6.3 billion Congestion-Relief Program – Open Roads for a Faster Future. The section of 22nd Street under I-88 is being widened to three lanes in each direction as part of this project.

22nd Street Traffic Shift Begins Friday, April 17

Lane closures are scheduled during the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 17, to put traffic into the new split configuration. When complete, one westbound lane will shift onto the eastbound side of the road while the right lane remains in place on the westbound side of the road. Traffic planning to turn left to enter westbound I-88 at Spring Road will be directed to stay to the left; traffic planning to turn right onto McDonald Drive or Spring Road will be directed to remain on the right side of the split. Daily, off-peak lane closures will be planned as needed to complete center pier and storm sewer work. This stage is scheduled to remain in place through the summer months.

Work Zone Safety

A 40 m.p.h. speed limit is in effect 24/7 on 22nd Street in Oak Brook in the construction zone between Jorie Blvd. and McDonald Drive, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise motorists of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.
