11/04/2009 Intermittent Overnight Full Closures on Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Tonight To Replace Downed Com-Ed Power Lines
Overnight Closures Scheduled Between Dempster Street and Willow Road
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Work is scheduled tonight, Nov. 4, on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) between Dempster St. and Willow Rd. to replace two downed Com-Ed power lines. The work was added to a previously scheduled overnight lane closure to relocate barrier wall as part of the Tollway’s Tri-State Tollway Rebuild & Widen Project. While traffic is lighter after midnight, some delays are expected.

An overnight single lane closure will begin in the northbound lanes between Dempster Street and Willow Road at 7 p.m. to begin barrier wall relocation work. At approximately midnight the contractor will cease barrier wall relocation work and Illinois State Police District 15 will be on site to assist the contractor as they shut down the roadway in both directions for 15-minute durations so Com-Ed crews can run a new power line across all lanes of traffic. Cranes on both sides of the road will then lift the lines in place so Com-Ed can reposition the new power line. Once the power line is in place the roadway will be reopened to allow traffic to move while crews reposition the cranes so the process can be repeated. Two full traffic stops are scheduled at 12:30 a.m. and again at 1 a.m. A third full closure is scheduled as a contingency. Once the final full roadway closure is complete, one single northbound lane will remain closed until 5 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, to complete barrier wall relocation work.

This work is scheduled during overnight hours to minimize the impact to traffic.

Work Zone Safety

A 45 m.p.h. speed limit is in effect 24/7 in all construction zones, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise motorists of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker. Keep Workers Alive – Drive 45.
