11/25/2009 Illinois Tollway Opens Three Lanes in Each Direction on 22nd st. as Promised for Holiday Shopping Season in Oak BrookDOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – The Illinois Tollway has completed the project to reconstruct and widen 22nd Street in Oak Brook and has opened three lanes in each direction under the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) on schedule in time for the start of the holiday shopping season. The improvements on 22nd Street are part of the Reagan Memorial Tollway Rebuild & Widen Project between York Road and IL Route 83 and have been coordinated with the Village of Oak Brook and the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the Tollway’s $6.3 billion Congestion-Relief Program – Open Roads for a Faster Future.Multiple Rebuild & Widen Projects are nearing completion along a 23-mile stretch of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) from Oak Brook to North Aurora. The I-88 Rebuild & Widen Project from the Aurora Toll Plaza to Orchard Road has completed mainline roadway work and completion of the westbound Fox River Bridge is scheduled in December. The I-88 Rebuild & Widen Project from Finley Road to IL Route 83 also is scheduled for completion in December. Segments between IL Route 59 and Finley Road and between IL Route 83 and York Road are already complete and drivers are benefitting from four new lanes of pavement in each direction. New Lanes Open for Oak Brook Holiday Shopping Three new lanes in each direction are now open to traffic in their final configuration on 22nd Street under the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Bridge. Work in 2009 included reconstructing and adding a third lane on 22nd Street between Jorie Boulevard and McDonalds Drive. Other work included rebuilding two bike paths under I-88, resurfacing 22nd Street between Jorie Boulevard and Salt Creek and bridge lighting aesthetics. While all roadwork is complete, some work on the bike paths will continue in December. Part of Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program The reconstruction and widening of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) is part of the Illinois Tollway’s Congestion-Relief Program - Open Roads for a Faster Future – which will reduce travel times by rebuilding/restoring nearly all of the system, widening/adding lanes to many miles of existing roads, converting 20 mainline toll plazas to barrier-free Open Road Tolling, and extending I-355 south to I-80 in Will County.
