Wood Dale Road Interchange Project
In 2016, work continues to build the new full-access Wood Dale Road Interchange to improve travel and provide access to the new Illinois Route 390 Tollway. The new $26 million Wood Dale Road Interchange Project includes construction of a new bridge providing two lanes in each direction to carry Wood Dale Road traffic over the Illinois Route 390 Tollway, as well as construction of new ramps carrying traffic to and from frontage roads to provide full access to the Illinois Route 390 Tollway. The new interchange is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2017.
The new Wood Dale Road Interchange will replace the existing signalized intersection at Thorndale Avenue and Wood Dale Road and will provide access to the new Illinois Route 390 Tollway via new eastbound and westbound frontage roads. The new interchange project includes contributions from the City of Wood Dale for local improvements and aesthetic features, including decorative pedestrian lighting and fencing along with architectural flourishes on the new bridge to create a gateway to the Wood Dale community.
Wood Dale Road Bridge
In 2016, construction of the Wood Dale Road Bridge is scheduled to be complete. The new steel bridge structure will include 21 beams and a concrete deck supported by a center median pier and concrete abutments on either side of the Illinois Route 390 Tollway.
In 2016, construction will begin on the four interchange ramps that will connect Wood Dale Road to the new Illinois Route 390 Tollway via the frontage road system. Interchange work also includes construction of the new eastbound frontage road between Mittel Boulevard and Wood Dale Road, as well as the construction of Hansen Court between AEC Drive and Wood Dale Road. AEC Drive was reconfigured into a cul-de-sac south of Thorndale Avenue in 2015.
Bike and Pedestrian Path
The project provides room for a future multi-use bicycle and pedestrian path on the northbound side of the bridge. The City of Wood Dale is funding construction of numerous sidewalk and bike path improvements to be constructed along with the Illinois Route 390 Project. Once complete, the multi-use paths will provide access along the northbound side of Wood Dale Road from the Illinois Route 390 Tollway south to schools and parks. A path along the Illinois Route 390 Tollway frontage roads will connect to the Salt Creek Greenway Trail and into Itasca and east to Illinois Route 83.
Whenever possible, the Illinois Tollway system uses traffic shifts and shoulders to keep as many lanes open during peak hours as were available before construction.
However, lane reductions will be needed on Wood Dale Road and off-peak lane closures may be needed on Thorndale Avenue to complete the work.
The construction of the Wood Dale Road Interchange will improve travel and create a gateway to the City of Wood Dale with full access from the future Illinois Route 390 Tollway.
These improvements are part of the Illinois Route 390 Project. The Illinois Tollway is coordinating construction of the new interchange with DuPage County, the City of Wood Dale and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Up to 12,800 vehicles use this section of Wood Dale Road daily. Up to 37,500 vehicles on the existing Thorndale Avenue travel through this intersection daily.
The $3.4 billion Elgin O'Hare Western Access Project is included in the Illinois Tollway's 15-year, $12 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.
The Illinois Tollway is committed to "Building Green" and minimizing the environmental impact of construction by reducing, recycling, and reusing materials. Reusing materials reduces the volume of material that otherwise would be sent to landfills.
