Construction Update (7/23/21)

On I-94, the westbound shoulder between the Edens Spur Toll Plaza and the Union Pacific Railroad is closed through early August.

Temporary lane and shoulder closures may be scheduled as needed to complete landscaping and other minor work for the project.

Please check the Daily Construction Alert for up-to-date closure information.

Customer Impacts

Lane closures and traffic shifts are necessary to provide a work zone for construction and safely accommodate traffic.

Reconstruction work will require traffic to be reduced to one lane in both directions for the duration of the work.

Pfingsten Road will be closed to traffic for up to six months while the existing bridge over the Edens Spur is replaced. A detour will be posted.

Purpose

The Edens Spur was constructed in 1958 with two lanes in each direction between the Tri-State Tollway and the Edens Expressway. These roadway repairs and reconstruction are needed to extend the life of the existing roadway and provide a smooth driving surface, as well as safe and convenient travel for Tollway customers. This work is part of the Tollway’s 15-year, $14 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.

Sustainability

The Tollway is committed to building green and minimizing the environmental impact of construction by reducing, recycling and reusing materials.

Work Zone Safety

The Illinois Tollway is committed to ensuring that the Edens Spur remains safe for both drivers and workers during construction, which is part of the agency’s overall commitment to roadway safety.  A 45 mph work zone speed limit will be in effect in areas with construction on the Edens Spur Tollway.
