Tri-State Tollway (I-294)

Ogden Avenue Interchange Project

As part of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Project, the Ogden Avenue Interchange Project will provide improvements on Ogden Avenue and the bridge over I-294, as well as reconfigure ramps on the east side of I-294 to improve access and traffic flow.

In 2023, the Tollway will continue to relocate the ramp connecting northbound I-294 to eastbound Ogden Avenue, and to remove the ramp connecting eastbound Ogden Avenue to northbound I-294.

Construction will begin in spring 2022 and ramp improvements are scheduled to be complete in 2023.

Construction Update (4/15/24)

I-294
On northbound I-294 between Maple Avenue and Ogden Avenue, four lanes of traffic are shifted to the left and one lane is shifted to the right with a work zone in the middle. All exiting traffic must use the right lane well in advance of the interchange to access both eastbound and westbound Ogden Avenue. Traffic is scheduled to remain in this configuration through spring.

Please check the Daily Construction Alert for up-to-date closure information.

Customer Impacts

The Ogden Avenue Interchange will remain open to traffic during construction. The Tollway will use traffic shifts and lane reductions when possible to maintain access, however temporary closures and detours will be scheduled as needed to safely accommodate construction work.

Electronic message signs and construction signage will be put in place in advance to alert drivers to scheduled lane closures, traffic patterns and work zone speed limits.

In 2022, ramp closures with posted detours will be scheduled, including long-term closures of the ramps connecting westbound Ogden Avenue to northbound I-294 for four months.

Purpose

The Illinois Tollway is investing $8.9 million for reconfiguring the Ogden Avenue Interchange to improve mobility and traffic flow for local drivers on Ogden Avenue and Tollway customers. Currently up to 40,000 vehicles use the interchange daily with up to 33,600 vehicles traveling on Ogden Avenue in the area.

Improvements to the Ogden Avenue Interchange area are part of the $4 billion Central Tri-State Project, which is reconstructing and widening the roadway between Balmoral Avenue and 95th Street to provide congestion relief, update old infrastructure to meet current and future transportation demand and address regional needs.

Local Coordination

Improvements at the Ogden Avenue Interchange area are being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation and local communities including the Village of Hinsdale, Village of Oak Brook and the Village of Western Springs. The improvement is just one component of a future project to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow in the area. The Tollway also agreed to partner with IDOT to conduct an engineering study to evaluate a broader improvement at the I-294/Ogden Avenue interchange.

Work Zone Safety

The Illinois Tollway is committed to ensuring that Ogden Avenue and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) remain safe for both drivers and workers during construction, which is part of the agency’s overall commitment to roadway safety.

Work zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. On Ogden Avenue and on I-294 work zone speed limits will be in effect throughout the construction season.
