When driving on the road, time is money. I-PASS is a prepaid electronic toll collection system that allows you to automatically pay tolls as you drive. It keeps you moving through the open road tolling lanes along the Illinois Tollway—eliminating idle time, excessive braking and the need to stop at toll plazas.
Every toll lane on the Illinois Tollway accepts I-PASS. You can also use it on the Chicago Skyway, the Indiana Toll Road and in 17 other states (via the E-ZPass system).

- Cheaper – Save 50 percent on tolls. Account funds never expire.
- Safer – Eliminate the challenge of changing lanes to reach the cash lanes at toll plazas.
- Easier – Stop worrying about finding exact change or remembering to pay tolls online.

The Illinois Tollway developed I-PASS Assist to assist income-eligible to easily and affordably obtain an I-PASS. I-PASS Assist works like a standard I-PASS account, but allows eligible drivers to purchase at a discount of $20. If you are enrolled in Medicaid, you qualify for I-PASS Assist.
I-PASS Assist FAQs
A customer interested in opening an I-PASS Assist Account will need to present a valid ID, such as an Illinois driver's license, as well as documentation verifying they are enrolled in Medicaid (administered through the Department of Public Aid) or the Illinois Link Card program (which provides benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps, and is administered through the Department of Human Services).
You must present a valid ID, such as an Illinois driver's license, as well as documentation verifying membership in the Medicaid program. You may open an I-PASS Assist account with cash, check or a credit/debit card.
What is an I-PASS Transponder?
An I-PASS transponder is a small radio-frequency identified device that mounts quickly and easily on your vehicle. As your vehicle travels through a toll plaza or an open road tolling lane, a radio antenna sends a signal to your I-PASS transponder that triggers the deduction of a toll from your account.
Use Your I-PASS Transponder for Toll Discounts
To enjoy the I-PASS discount on tolls, you must use a transponder. If a transponder is not detected, we will use a photo of your license plate to attempt to post a “video toll” to your account so that you can avoid violations. After five video tolls on a single license plate in one month, you will lose the I-PASS discount on tolls for that license plate, and any subsequent video tolls to that plate will post at the full cash rate for the remainder of the month.
To ensure the transponder is read accurately it should be properly mounted on the vehicle's windshield using the removable mounting strips. The strips do not leave a residue on your windshield. Mounting strips are available at no cost at all Customer Service Centers and every manned toll plaza.
Read about using I-PASS in other states.
*Additional mounting strips are available at Customer Service Centers and toll plazas. Some windshields require different transponder installation. Review transponder installation exceptions. The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company is also charging I-PASS customers $1.00 surcharge for improperly mounted transponders. The surcharge will be added to the standard toll charge on your account statement.

Convenient for families and businesses, Shared Balance does not require each I-PASS transponder to maintain its own balance; rather, all transponders draw from the same, single prepaid account balance. This means that each transponder does not need to maintain a separate balance.
Shared Balance allows customers with multiple I-PASS transponders on one account to share the funds from one account balance. If multiple vehicles are sharing a single transponder, you must register each vehicle to the I-PASS account. Use online account management to add a vehicle now.
With a shared balance account, multiple transponders are listed on one account drawing funds from a common balance. This means each transponder does not need to maintain a separate balance.

All About Video Tolls
I-PASS customers who drive the Tollway without an I-PASS transponder may incur video tolls. Customers who incur more than 5 video tolls will be charged the full cash rate.
A video toll occurs when the signal from your I-PASS transponder cannot be read, but the transaction is digitally recorded and later matched to your license plate. These typically occur when a transponder is missing, improperly mounted or inactive due to a dead battery. You will see video toll appear next to the transaction when you review your account records. If your transponder is properly mounted but a video toll has posted to your account, please test the transponder battery to be sure it is functioning properly. A toll that is successfully deducted at the time of a transaction is labeled "toll.”
All About tTolls
A "tToll" occurs when a signal from your I-PASS transponder is read, but no toll is collected because there are insufficient funds in your account at the time of the transaction. Funds must be added to your account within seven days of this transaction in order to avoid a violation. If funds are added within the necessary timeframe, a "tToll" transaction will be posted to your account, otherwise, this unpaid transaction is recorded as a violation.Review your I-PASS account transactions.
Using Your I-PASS on Other Toll Roads
Rates/discounts are set by each facility.
Enjoy the benefits of I-PASS when traveling beyond Illinois.
Use I-PASS anywhere E-ZPass is accepted.*
*I-PASS is not accepted at airport parking lots nor any other non-roadway facilities that accept E-ZPass.
I-PASS users do not need to register with E-ZPass, and E-ZPass users do not need to register with I-PASS in order to use the other system. Make sure your transponder is properly mounted and your account information is current. It may take up to 48 hours for out-of-state roadways to update your I-PASS account.
I-PASS is accepted on the Central Florida Expressway Authority's 118-mile toll road network in Metro Orlando which includes downtown Orlando and surrounding communities. See a roadmap of where I-PASS is accepted.
Currently, the Central Florida Expressway (CFX) is the only toll operator in Florida that accepts I-PASS and E-ZPass. I-PASS users that travel out of network and are unable to pay with cash may receive toll-by-plate invoices from other Florida tolling agencies.
*The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company (the company that operates the Indiana Toll Road) and the Skyway Concession Company LLC (the company that manages the Chicago Skyway) both pass on a 3-cent-per-transaction fee to all I-PASS customers using the Indiana Toll Road and Chicago Skyway. The Indiana Toll Road Concession Company also charges I-PASS customers $1.00 surcharge for improperly mounted transponders. The surcharge will be added to the standard toll charge on your account statement. Learn how to mount your transponder properly.
Commercial vehicles (including their trailers) that exceed four tires and two axles, and that are traveling on E-ZPass roads, must exchange their I-PASS transponder for the compatible E-ZPass "blue" transponder available at every Tollway Customer Service Center and at select Road Ranger outlets.
Using your E-ZPass on the Illinois Tollway
Do you have an E-ZPass? You can use it on the Illinois Tollway. You do not need both an I-PASS and E-ZPass.
The E-ZPass Interagency Group (IAG) consists of 29 member agencies in 17 states that use the same technology and allow travelers to use the same transponder on toll roads throughout the network. I-PASS is included in the E-ZPass group so I-PASS and E-ZPass customers can use their transponders interchangeably.

- Truckers save $25 for every 15-minute reduction in trip time (Midwest Truckers Association). For example, truckers can save as much as $333 per month if they take 10 round trips using I-PASS on the full length of the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294/I-80).

Drivers Love I-PASS and Open Road Tolling
If you are one of the many happy customers enjoying open road tolling lanes...
Below is a sampling of the testimonials we've received from happy I-PASS customers.
Note: Your submission may be published on this website or used in other Tollway publications and promotions.
Besides the convenience of the transponder, the I-PASS customer service team is stellar. I recently had an issue where I had not updated my account with our new vehicle, and had received a citation in the mail. I called in to customer service, and the representative walked me through the steps, and fixed everything for us - saving me from having to attend a hearing in Downers Grove! The representative was very pleasant and helpful. Thank you!
I do love my I-PASS, but I also think that the up to the minute account information on your website is also commendable. I recently received gift cards, however, which must be applied over the phone. While I initially dreaded making the call, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no hassle, no wait, and the operator was efficient and friendly! Thank you!
I commute to Chicago numerous times a month to visit family and friends. I-PASS has made it very easy to use the Tollway, and not having to wait in line to pay tolls saves a lot of valuable time. Also, I feel that I-PASS provides my family with a safer driving environment by keeping my vehicle in a fairly steady flow of traffic, versus many vehicles unexpectedly changing lanes and the stop and go traffic at tollbooth areas.
Dorothy, Blue Island
I'm a working mother of two little girls so time is precious. These new Open Road Tolling lanes are going to cut my travel time by about 30 minutes each way, which means I'll have more time to make my kids' dinner, finish homework, take baths and read bed time stories.
Michael and RoseMary, Wheaton
My wife and I belong to the GWRRA a motorcycle club. I-PASS eliminates the need to remove gloves and fumble around looking for change while holding up traffic. I recommend I-PASS to all motorcycle riders to improve safety and convenience.
Jackie, Kenosha, WI
I have had I-PASS for about three years and I love not needing change. Best of all I same time by not waiting in line, cutting my travel time down by 30 minutes.
Monica, Rochester, Minnesota
We LOVE our I-PASS. We travel from Minnesota to Ohio at least 3 times a year. It saves us money and most importantly it saves us time. Traveling with 3 children, the less stops we have to make the better. WE LOVE IT!!
I'm from a small town downstate but when I got my I-PASS I could run with Chicagoans and felt smart and sassy. Go I-PASS!
This makes highway driving such a breeze...I head into the city pretty much all summer long whether it's going to Cubs games, Taste of Chicago or any attraction downtown, the I-PASS saves me a lot of time and money...which is especially important in these tough economic times! I LOVE MY I-PASS!!
