Tolling 2020
Everything you need to know about TOLLING 2020
The Illinois Tollway is launching a series of tolling reforms that will make the Illinois Tollway system more equitable for everyone. These changes include a reduction to initial costs associated with unpaid toll notices, a significant reduction to existing violations, and COVID-19 violation relief.
Together, these measures take a holistic approach to realigning the way customers interact with the Illinois Tollway and lay the foundation for future changes to ensure the Illinois Tollway system works for everyone. Violation Relief
Beginning in July, toll violation fines in existing notices prior to March 9, 2020 will be reduced to $3 to provide customers an opportunity to pay off fines at a significantly reduced rate. This includes anyone previously sent to collections for outstanding toll violations. Below is an example of the reduction customers can expect.
These reductions go far beyond any previous Illinois Tollway violation relief efforts and give customers a chance to finally settle their past unpaid toll violations.
There’s no need to contact the Tollway to qualify for relief. To view your reduced balance, click the link below and enter the number on your previous violation notices. The reduction will be reflected in the system. Note: Notice numbers begin with “VN” "VW" or "VS" followed by a series of numbers.
Payments can be made all at once or at any time through the end of January 2022, and all payments can all be made online.
Invoicing Begins - Unpaid Tolls After June 25, 2020
Beginning June 25, a new process for unpaid tolls will defer the issuance of violation notices by several months. Unpaid tolls will no longer be met out of the gate with a “one size fits all” $20 violation if left unpaid.
Customers still have at least 14 days to pay unpaid tolls online with no additional fines or fees. If left unpaid, owners across all vehicle classes will now receive an invoice for unpaid tolls with an initial fee that better aligns with the underlying tolls associated with the class of vehicle. Passenger vehicles will see an 85 percent reduction in initial costs, with a $3 invoice fee, rather than a $20 fine for each unpaid toll.
The chart details the invoice fees customers will see. Customers across all classes will see a reduction, and violations will only occur after a notice remains unpaid after over 90 days.
COVID-19 Related “.01 Cent” Invoices - Unpaid Tolls March 9, 2020 – June 25, 2020
On June 25th, the Illinois Tollway formalized the grace period for unpaid tolls during the COVID-19 pandemic from March 9, 2020, through June 25, 2020. During this three-month period, vehicle owners with unpaid tolls will receive an invoice for tolls only without the added expense of a violation.
In an effort to expedite the process, the Illinois Tollway leveraged existing systems to process these invoices, which necessitated the inclusion of a .01 cent invoicing fee. The fee is only applicable to COVID-19 related unpaid tolls. Customers who receive an invoice should pay all unpaid tolls to ensure avoiding future fines and fees.
